Slade's paintings are a combination of watercolor and handmade rice papers known as washi. This combinations allows not only the ability to express the color and mood of a subject, but it's texture as well. She creates paintings with rice papers that she has hand-stained with watercolor. After drawing an quick image on the paper she 'constructs' the painting, more like a true collage. She uses large and small pieces some with texture and some without. Then she paints into the collage, unifying areas, enhancing shapes and adding detail. The result is a strong image, generally more abstract, with the hand-stained papers adding an intensity that does not fade.
